1. Tell Me More
Making It Count. With the Plus 3 Network, we let you turn every step, every hour in the gym, every stroke in the pool into Kudos - a points system that we convert to charitable dollars for a Cause of your choice. We do this at no cost to you via the support of corporate Sponsors - dedicated companies who care about the planet, about health and fitness, and about the things we can do together to make a difference. Values are placed on Activity based on either distance covered - like per mile for a run, or time logged - like per hour of Yoga. We have over 40 different Sports and Activities. Each one pays a little different. And when we can validate a workout, through technology like a GPS or GPS enabled iPhone, your efforts earn even more.
Free. And as we said, this is all free to you. We’ve identified companies who want to support you as you get healthier, get social, and help others. All you need to do is choose a Cause/Sponsor combination and then get out there, either solo or with friends, and get going.
Activity = Rewards = Fundraising. Kudos to You. When you log an activity on The Plus 3 Network, either by simply filling out our form on your Activities page "by hand" or by uploading with a GPS, we apply our Kudos to the Activity. By identifying it as a run, an hour in the gym, a walk, a game of soccer, or other -- we apply a rewardKudos value that matches that Activity (i.e. 21 Kudos per mile or 26 Kudos per hour, depending on the Activity - see the table below ). Then based on what your Sponsor has pledged,we convert your Kudos to charitable dollars for your Cause.
How many Kudos do I earn per mile or per hour? We are constantly tweaking the mileage numbers as we motivate, highlight, and/or maximize Activities.

Our Rates Change Over Time.
Just like a currency, our Kudos system and the values we place for each Activity are constantly evolving. We use a series of algorithms, Member usage patterns, and deliberate increases or decreases to keep Plus 3 fresh and fun.
For example, we know that an hour of Running is a very different Activity than an hour of Baseball. So our base line algorithms work to equate the physical effort and we score those efforts to the Kudos. Then we look at the actual things that people log. We know how long the average road bike ride lasts, or what the average ski day looks like, and we work to use this information to tweak our Kudos. And then sometimes, like Commute to Work Month, where we may deliberately increase the Kudos for biking just to get us all motivated to ride bikes to work for that month. Look for the * next to a sport in the table above to see if it has a "Kudos Kicker".
More Kudos for Validated Activities
We believe in the good nature in all of us, and so do our Sponsors, so all you need to do have fun on Plus 3 and earn Kudos is your "word" that what you enter is what you did. But one of the cool things we can do is use technology to Validate your exercise, make it easier to track and log, and even show off what your metrics and routes are. And when we can do that, we double the value to your Kudos.
When Plus 3 started in 2008, we applied our Activity rates directly to dollars. In April of 2010 we were able to migrate to our Kudos to Dollars program.
Kudos to Dollars
Each of our Sponsors is dedicating money to great Causes, but just like us not every Sponsor can contribute at the same rates as other Sponsors. Like a currency on an Exchange Rate, these numbers will fluctuate every month as we move through the year based on how much money is left in a Sponsor's Pledge, how many Members are active, and other such factors.
The most important thing is that they are there to support you, and their conversion rates is usually adjusted to make sure they can support you for a long period of time.| Sponsor | Kudos to Pennies | Means 100 Kudos Raises |
| Ahnu / Breast Cancer Fund | 0.30 | $0.30 |

Future Sports
Plus 3 can track and reward all kinds of activity, both indoor and out. Our list of activities will grow. We launched the Network with five activities, today we are at 40+. One of the ways we add new Activities is by seeing people choosing "Other" as a sport but writing in the actual activity, like "Shoveling Snow". That's how we added "Chores" as an Activity. As we add members, Sponsors, and Causes with more interests, we will grow. Suggestions? Let us know at Support@plus3network.com.
GPS vs. "Hand Entry" - Remember President Reagan's famous quote about "Trust But Verify"? That's sort of Plus 3 Network's motto when it comes to recording your efforts. We trust that the items you put into the system to earn Kudos and raise funds for a Cause are accurate to your best estimate, but when we can verify the accuracy (like with a GPS upload that includes the course, the pace, the distance and the date), we can transfer even more funds to the Cause. And on top of fund raising, you also get to use your Activities to earn Rewards and all kinds of other cool swag.
Need a GPS?
We have a free iPhone app that allows you to record your Activities and wirelessly upload to Plus 3 Network. You can get it here from iTunes or directly from an iPhone by searching the App Catalog for "Plus3" ( do not put in a space between Plus and 3).
We are also working on additional Phone / GPS applications for Android phones, and more are in the pipeline.
As far as Sports GPS goes, we are currently compatible with most of the Garmin GPS fitness models, the Edge series and the Forerunner series. There are about 10 models that work with Plus 3. We started with these because they capture a majority of the fitness GPS market and many of our members already use them.
You can go to www.garmin.com to find more specifics on these products.
The Forerunner models (wristwatch types) are on this page: Garmin Forerunner
And the Edge models (cycling) are here:Garmin Edge
New Garmin products can be found and purchased at many retail locations and by searching on the internet. Used Garmin units are often listed on Craigslist.
How Does My Cause Get Funds? We run a report about once a month for our Causes and Sponsors. The report tells Sponsors how many Plus 3 members covered how many miles/hours that month. Then the corporate Sponsor writes a nice check to your Cause and everybody wins. We don't take a penny of the Spnsors pledge. We just record your efforts and report to the Sponsors and Causes.
Big Brother? Not! Privacy questions are only natural when someone asks you to put data up there on the net, and GPS data to boot. But we do not share any individual data with your Cause(s) or Sponsor(s), just aggregated "group" data. We never say John ran here or Jane rode there; we just say 10,000 riders rode 100,000 miles last period. We take your privacy seriously. You can opt to share or not share your Activities with the Community or just with your Friends. Or keep it to yourself. After all, it is your information. We let you choose, and we respect your choice. Here is our Privacy Policy.
So to summarize, every effort your record on Plus 3 Network earns rewards for you and money for your Cause and shows up on your Calendar. A GPS verified record earns 2 x-- yes, Two Times-- more funds than a hand entry. And it's 2 times more fun, 2 times more geeky, and even 2 times more valuable to the rest of the Plus 3 community when you post Activities via GPS.
2. Hand Entered Guidelines
Hand Entry Guidelines
or "Can I enter this Activity for Kudos?"
You can enter almost any type of Activity into Plus 3 and turn it into Kudos for the leader board and money for a Cause. We like that. But to paraphrase Peter Parker's uncle, "With great flexibility comes great responsibility."
We've waited a while to post any rules of thumb on what is or isn't a "good way to enter an Activity". Now that we have some distance under our feet and some time in the saddle and we can share some thoughts based on the useage patterns and comments from you, our radio listeners.
Plus 3's Golden Rule
The overall thought is "Only Enter things you think are OK for another member of Plus 3 to enter." It's sort of the Plus 3 Golden Rule. If you find yourself wondering if what you are entering is "fair", then it is probably worth erring towards not entereing it for Kudos. Instead, we do have a category called "Interesting Things I wanted to Enter" that is a catch all for cool wild wierd and fun things but awards no Kudos. Try that.
Q: How Far Back Can I Log Activities?
A: We are asking you to log no furhter back than 28 days (4 weeks) from the current day. So take whatever today is and only enter things within the last 28 days.
We will soon be making that a part of the software that we won't award any $ for anything older than the current date. We need to do that to keep the accounting for our Causes accurate, and to do that we need a cutoff date. When we set that up, then Members can enter as far back as they want to to get Kudos, but we will only convert the Kudos to dollars for the past 28 days.
Q: Can I group things together? Like a week of running?
A: Yes, but we are asking you to group no more than a weeks worth. We need to keep the chunks of exercise into a grouping that others can look at see a realistic number.
As an example of going too far is to do a group of month's Worth of Runs. Or year's worth of Bike Commutes. Or a year's worth of Yoga.
Q: Can I log my work as an Activty?A: This one is kind of grey, but let us try to flush out what we think is kosher.
If the Activity is a discrete Activity that you can track then that's probably pretty good. Some examples that make sense:
- You are a bike messenger and can track discrete rides / distance. "Delivered six packages"
- You are a postal worker and can track your route - "walked my route"
- You are a construction worker and can itemize your tasks. "Laid a foundation - 3 hours"
Things that are not within the spirit of Plus 3's general membership gestalt:
.- You list 8 Hours Physical Labor every day as Work
- You list 8 hours of Physical lanor every day as Housework
- You list 8 hours of Yoga as Teaching Yoga
- Listing a big chunk of anything for a big chunk of hours everyday
To summarize - if you can keep it in discrete chunks that someone can look at and think "that's neat" or "that's cool" or "that's right" then that's probably going to fit within our Plus 3 Golden Rule.
As a final note on Physical Labor -
The spirit of the Physical Labor, Lite, Medium and Hard, is that it should be used now and again when you do something of note, or out of the daily routine like your once a week mowing of the lawn, or your five days in winter when you got to shovel the driveway, or that day you clean out the gutters.
It is not meant to be a way to track your job in one big block.
If you have thoughts or comments or additions you think we should make, send them to Support@plus3network.com. Thanks!
3. Rules of Conduct
Plus 3 Network Rules of Conduct on the fun-fitness fundraising road
We are a gathering place for people. People who post things that other people can see. We are place the lets you be on a leader board, earn money for Causes; a place to earn rewards and claim some bragging rights. Plus 3 is a virtual highway with lots of intersections, off-ramps and on-ramps. And sometimes our Members will run a stop sign by mistake or get into a fender bender
with another Member.
And since its public - we can’t please everybody all the time. But we can establish a few rules of the road
so people have an idea of what we deem as appropriate behavior and what the consequences of not behaving can be.
First - remember, if you do not mark something as Private, then the public can see it. The public means friends, strangers, Sponsors and Causes. Public also means people who may not even be Plus 3 members but are simply browsing the site.
Rules and Guidelines:
No Profanity. Please, leave it out of your posts, out of your descriptions, and out of your comments. We will remove Activities and Posts that use overt profanity.
Be Honest. We take you at your word. If you say you ran, or did yoga, or skied, we believe you. When you use a GPS, it’s more believable and you earn more for your Cause. The occasional mistake in describing an Activity or the occasional slip of the mouse are cool. We all have those days. But we will remove Activities if you show a pattern of hyperbole when entering Activities, especially if they put you on the top of the Leader Boards to the detriment of others.
Be Civil. If you notice repeat mistakes
on someone’s Activities, don’t go ballistic on the person. There are often reasons, some of them are technical or some are from folks trying to creatively use Plus 3 to record what they are doing when we don’t have that specific Activity in our system.
What to do if you have a beef with a Member. First, send a note to support@plus3network.com alerting us to your complaint. We’ll take a look at the Member or the Activities in question. We may find the person simply make a mistake or was pushing the system; and we will try to take care of it.
Consequences. If we find a Member is willfully cheating the system, violating our guidelines, or worse, we will turn them off after three written warnings. And just like the County Sheriff dealing with a bad driver, we reserve the right to suspend a Member’s Plus 3 account for one infraction, if we deem the Activity or Post is grossly negligent, reckless, or defamatory.
We imagine that these rules and guidelines may grow, but we hope not. We hope everyone can be honest, civil, and of proper voice. Plus 3 should be a fun, safe place to play.
people4. Your Home Page
A Quick Glance at What is Going On. This is where you land when you log into Plus 3. We show your Dashboard/Profile at the top, your Activity Feed in the center, your Sponsor and Cause messages on the right, just above your You/Friends Leader Board, and over on the left are comments on your Activities, and a sampling of your friends.
Activity Feed- See what people in your Friends list have done recently. Filter it to show just your Activities, or filter it to see what is going on in all of Plus 3.
Sponsor Cause - Learn more about what your Cause and Sponsor are doing and see all the Members, their Activities, and Leader Board for only those Members.
Leader Board - See how you stack up in Kudos raised against your friends. Or filter it to see how you stack up against the top earners in Plus 3
Comments - When you click on a public Activity in Plus 3, there is a space to make a comment. Impressed by a long walk? Want to razz a buddy? Use comments. They show up on your Home Page, and we also highlight the Activities in Plus 3 that have the most comments written about them.
Random Friends - For fun we show six Friends at random that changes with every page refresh. Click on a Friend to see the last four things they logged or how they are doing on the funds and Challenges front.
5. People
People. Friends. Groups. This is the place to connect to and get out there with other Plus 3 members and start doing things together. You will have more fun, stay more motivated and get better results - and of course, so will they.
Search - Start with a search to see if any of your friends are already in Plus 3 Network. Right now we have the ability to search by Person, City, or Sport, but we will continue to add more options over time.
Add Friends - When you find someone via a Search, Press the Add to Friends button and use our pre-texted message or add your own eloquent prose. They will get an email in their inbox and a message in their Plus 3 Network Messages section letting them know you are out there. Once they accept your request, you will get their picture in your "My Friends" section, and vice versa.
Invite Friends - If your friends are not yet in Plus 3 Network, we make it easy to send them an email inviting them to join.
See Profile - Click on a picture in your "My Friends" section and see what they are up to, who they have chosen for a Cause and Sponsor, and other details.
Organize your Friends into Groups - Do you walk with certain people, ride with others and do everything with others? Use Groups to organize your friends, then send a Group email or request to everybody at once.
6. Activities
My Activities - A place to track where you have been and what you have done, while earning Kudos and money for your Cause... and Rewards for your own bad self.
My / Community Activities - When you and others in the Plus 3 Network upload or hand enter an Activity, you can choose to keep it to yourself or share with everybody. Found a great new route you want everyone to know about? Share it. Doing secret training and want to keep it to yourself? Well, that is up to you.
Search - Search in My Activities to find your favorite past Activities, or search Community Activities for new routes in your own patch or get the locals take on a completely new territory.
Add by Hand - You do not need a GPS to track your Activities, raise funds, and earn Rewards, we also let you enter your Activities by hand. Well, by keyboard, anyway. Keep a complete list of your Activities and invite your friends to come join you.
Upload from a Device - If you have an iPhone or a Garmin GPS device, you can quickly upload Activities straight from your device, complete with course, pace, and more. GPS validated Activities yield two times the value of a hand entered Activity in your fundraising and Rewards pursuits.
Sport - Different Activities yield different values towards your Cause and Rewards. When you edit an Activity to include the sport, we apply those Kudos values to your account. You can track your Kudos and fund raising progress in your "My Account" dashboard and/or the "Challenges" tab.
Share, Leverage, Use
Email Activity - See a route you want to share? Simple: click the email button and share the route and your comments with Friends or training buddies.
Download to Device - Found an Activity you'd like to repeat or a new one you would like to try? Just download to your GPS and let it be your real-time guide map.
7. Challenges
This is where you turn your Sweat Equity into Social Capital - and we highlight how you are Making It Count.
The Challenges section is the dashboard, leader board, and motivational fulcrum for all your Plus 3 Activities.
How Am I Doing? See how you are doing with your Kudos, in your mileage, progress on Challenges, fund raising and friend raising.
Earn Rewards - Sign up for Plus 3 Challenges that turn your efforts into prizes, discounts, and, of course, bragging rights.
Challenges Tab
Click on the Challenges tab to view the current Plus 3 Challenges that can turn your efforts into prizes, discounts, and, of course, bragging rights. Challenges are a way to motivate yourself and get swag. Swag often comes from our Sponsors and can range from socks, to trinkets, to coupons. Most Plus 3 Challenges are open to all our members, but occasionally Sponsors may make specific challenges for their members only.
Go ahead and stack up your Challenges. We'll have easy ones, hard ones, and in-between ones, and they are a neat and fun way to keep you moving forward and Making It Count. Check back frequently, as we are always adding new challenges that you can participate in.
Signing up for a Challenge
Make sure to sign up for your challenges before you start logging activities that will count towards the challenge. For example, if you sign up for a Mountain Biking Challenge, Plus 3 will count all mountain biking activities after you sign up for the challenge. It will not go back and count previously logged mountain biking activities that occurred prior to the challenge sign-up.
To sign up for a challenge, simply click the button within the challenge that says “Join this Plus 3 Challenge”. That’s it! Plus 3 will begin to keep track of all the activities that you log that will count towards the Challenge. When you have completed the challenge, a message that you won will appear in your MyGoals section of your Home Page Header.
Claiming your Prize
Once you have completed a Challenge, navigate to the Challenges tab and expand the challenge that you have won. (Alternatively, you can simply click on the message in your HomePage Header and it will take you directly to the Challenge)
There will be a message at the bottom that explains how many activities you logged to complete the challenge, and a button will appear that says “Claim a Prize”. Claim your prize by clicking on this button.
Plus 3 processes the challenges once a month.
So if you claimed your prize sometime in November, you will receive an email from Plus 3 within the first week of December explaining how to receive your prize. Often times we use the Plus 3 eStore for challenge fulfillment. There you will be able to enter your coupon code and mailing address (since we never keep mailing addresses on your Plus 3 profile). Regardless of what kind of challenge prize you are receiving, you will receive clear instructions on how to claim your nifty reward in the first week of the month following challenge completion.
Note about Special Challenges
Sometimes we like to create fun challenges that don’t count activities and won’t use the challenge engine. The challenge description will mention “You don’t need to sign up for this Challenge, just use Plus 3”. Or there will be a description that tells you how to play. For example, “To Play, simply press the "Join this Plus 3 Challenge" button below then make sure you put he word Dog in the Tag box of your walk.” These challenges will also be processed and fulfilled once a month, but they require a search of the database, so results will not show up on the Challenge Page.
8. Sponsors & Causes
You Select the Cause and We Provide the Sponsor and We All Make It Count
This is how we turn your Activities into Rewards, rewards for you, and fund raising for your Cause.
We have located companies that want to support you and the community and are glad to help you bring funds and friends to worthy causes. Any supported mileage or time associated Activities you log into the Plus 3 Network raises money for your Cause.
Some of the Fine Print (but Large Enough to Read)
Sponsors support Members and Causes as their budget allows. Not all Sponsors can support a Cause at the same level as other Sponsors. View the Kudos conversation table to see how our Sponsors are able to support Kudos.
We encourage you to enter your Activities into the Plus 3 Network by hand or, if you have a GPS, automatically. We support the whole continuum, but we place the highest level of recognition and rewards to GPS-validated Activities.
Hand-entered values compared with GPS-validated values: we want you to be able to keep a complete log of all the things you do. And we will help you raise funds and earn rewards with hand-entered activities. But if you have a GPS device, we can actually validate Activities, validate pace and distance, validate speeds and streets, all things that allow us to put more value on GPS tracked Activities. So, the bottom line is, a Validated Activity yields 2 times the value of a hand entered Activity.
What are the limits? Each Sponsor and Cause works this out to match their goals, philosophies and budgets. When you choose a Sponsor/Cause we’ll highlight the limits of their giving capabilities, so you will know exactly how each Sponsor can support your fundraising activities.
Accelerators, Incentives, and Kickers. Sponsors and Causes may want to promote certain types of Activities, or a certain time period, or event, with their donation pool. Let us say they really want to promote Commuting by Bike for the month of May. They may motivate and incent their member by providing a Double Kudos reward for riding to and from work. Then they return to the baseline at the conclusion of the promotion.
How Does The Plus 3 Network make money? The same Sponsors who support your exercise efforts fund the Plus 3 Network. We make money by setting up the connection between you the member and your Sponsor (and, as a result, get to keep advertising off the site). The Sponsor values your participation and their opportunity to build a long-lasting bond with you.
Changing Sponsor and Cause Periodically we will open up the registration to allow members to re-up or change their sponsorships. This will evolve over time and with the addition of more Sponsors. If you have request to change the Sponsor/Cause, email us at Change@plus3network.com
9. Privacy Settings on Plus 3
Our Default Settings for Profile and Activities is: PUBLIC
You can change this on the Edit My Profile link by your picture (now's a good time to add your picture, if you have not already)
Activities and your Profile are two Separate places to use the Private button. Some people want to keep their profile private but want to have their Activities public (and pick the occasional private one)
Profile Private - Making your Profile "Private" will hide any profile information you have written about yourself, your fundraising legacy, and your accumulated Public Activities to others. Only your name will be visible to others. If people click on your name they will be given a message that says "This Member has Chosen to Keep their Profile Private."
Activity Private - Activities you post will be public for others to view. In order to be in Challenges and on Leader Boards, Activites must be public so other members can see who they are playing with. If you do not want people to see your Activities, you can mark them Private. Once marked Private, we will not show your Activity in a feed, but they DO Count towards fund raising.
Activities are Public unless you mark them Private by checking the box in the Hand Entered or Upload dialog box.
Plus 3 is a social network that relies on the viral growth of your good deeds to inspire others, garner accolades from your friends, and in general spread the good word. Activities you leave as Public will show up on the major search engines - Google, Bing, Yahoo!, etc.
IF you choose to, you can edit your past Activities to be Private by:
1. Clicking on the Activity name
2. And pressing the edit link
3. And selecting the Private Check Box
10. Compatibility for Browsers and GPS, Accuracy
Computer/Browser: You will need a computer with an internet connection to browse the Plus 3 Network and log your activities.
We work best with: Firefox 3.5+
But we also work with:
- Internet Explorer 8.0 & 9.0
- Safari Mac
- Safari on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad
- Chrome
We do not support:
- Internet Explorer 6.0
- Internet Explorer 7.0
Supported GPS Models: A GPS is not a requirement for Plus 3 Network, but is a lot more fun and we provide two times the fund raising power when you use one. Our long term goal is to be a place where GPS, accelerometers, indoor trainers and treadmills and devices of all types are supported. But for right now, we support the following Garmin models:
- Forerunner® 110
- Forerunner 201
- Forerunner® 205
- Forerunner 301
- Forerunner 305
- EdgeTM 605
- Edge 705
- Edge 205
- Edge 305
- Edge 500

You Do NOT Need A GPS: Our goal at Plus 3 is to motivate more and more of us to get out and exercise. We hope to work with the full continuum of people, from those already active to those who want to get off the couch and do more. We want to make logging Activities as easy as can be so it is not an impediment to keeping an accurate log. And we want technology to be an enabler, not a hurdle. We hope that things like phones and GPS devices and pedometers, etc, make it easier to keep a log. But we also recognize that they cost money, run out of batteries, or whatever, so we always want to make is that we can simply use a browser to capture data too.
On Accuracy: All GPS devices are not created equally. We just have to accept some amount of slack, leeway, and inaccuracy that comes with that. We hope you can get in that mindset too, to roll with it when it is not perfect and forgive Plus 3 and GPS devices our trespasses. Even in the Garmin family, improvements in technology, different price points, etc., lead to different accuracy. On top of that, we also must do calculations on what the GPS sends us. For example, our elevation numbers are calculations. Sometimes they are way off, and sometimes they are much closer. We plan to get better at this, but at times we are at the mercy of what the GPS gives us to start with. Having said all that, when you look at things more positively, it is pretty amazing that these devices give us a decent track of where we went. They do a pretty good job of determining distance covered. They do the basics of what we need and as with most technology, we hope we all get better with time.
Another word on Altitude: Most GPS, be it a Garmin or some other unit, do calculations to display elevation gain and loss. They do not pass that data as part of the data stream. So we have to do calculations based on what the device tells us. That means a GPS may display one thing and we may display another. We are using different equations, smoothing routines, and what not. So it is very possible that your GPS may say one thing and we may say another. We will both get better over time...
Thanks for using Plus 3, with or without a GPS, and we hope you can be in the spirit of site and to use us, our Sponsors + Causes, and your friends around you to keep motivated to get/keep healthy.
Known Issues or Quirks of our Support of GPS Devices:
-Garmin Edge 305: We do pretty good with this one since it has a barometric altimeter.
-Garmin Edge 705: We have seen unreliable elevation calculations between firmware updates. But it has a barometer and that helps.
-Garmin Forerunner 310xt: We have issues with displaying the proper axis in the charts (a fix is forth coming).
We also shows varying degrees of elevation accuracy since it doesn’t have a barometric altimeter.
-Garmin Forerunner 405: We show varying elevation accuracy since it does not have a barometric altimeter.
Garmin Communicator Plug-In: The first time you try and upload an activity from your Garmin device, Plus 3 Network will detect if you have the Garmin Communicator Plug-In and offer to install it for you. You can always check whether you have the latest plug-in at
http://www8.garmin.com/products/communicator/
The test link will test for the latest version and proper installation. As mentioned above with Safari, we sometimes see issues with the Garmin software for Safari users.
